    Hi Andy
In fact, there are three types of illumination.

    – A small light bulb
    – LED backlight
    – Electroluminiscent.

Small Light bulb – was used in older watches – the seventies – early eighties. Almost all brands Seiko Citizen Casio and Timex Cessel many others. But in the eighties and the latch at the end of the eighties could find the bulb in such a watch as Montana.

LED backlight – e.g.some of the Gshock models are LED backlit, Swiss Army/Victorinix sells a Night Vision line that is LED illuminated ($300-600$). LEDs usually gave backlight in green, but sometimes it was the color of amber.LEDs were also used in his later versions casio db, such as Casio DB-520.

Electroluminiscent backlight – used in some Casio watches called as “Fox Fire”.The Timex corporation has its very own similar technology called “Indiglo”.Some of G-Shock has Illuminator (where the “E” of the model number means Electroluminescent) gives a blue/green light.

The Electroluminiscent backlight is very pleasant.

I personally like such color and the effect of illumination.
Unfortunately, from my own experience I know that such a backlight system gets a lot of power !!!

How does it work ? – When you press the EL button on your Watch, the light turns on for approximately 1.5 seconds before going back to dark.
    Why so awhile ???
Exactly. Manufacturer – anticipated high power consumption – which is why so awhile.
But the manufacturer makes no mention of this in the manual ….

Such illumination e.g. Casio applied in :

    1. DW-9051/2
    2. GA-100A-9A
    3. GW5600J
    4. G-9200 Riseman
    5. G-9100 Gulfman
    6. G-9000MC-8D Mudman

LED backlight : such illumination is not so pleasant – but consumes little current and power !
Always still remains a small light bulb 🙂

    Hi

The miniature bulbs are used in older watches i.e. 70s and 80s. I think.
